El Farol Is Still Dark on Canyon Road. Here's How Close the Comeback Is.

Sunlit camel-stucco home enclosing a worn brick courtyard, with a recessed cedar door and an autumn serviceberry tree.

If you've walked past 808 Canyon Road this fall and wondered why El Farol still isn't open, here's why. The building, the name and the kitchen all changed hands in April. The liquor license didn't. Most of the time since then has gone into replacing it, and that piece cleared Santa Fe's Governing Body on Sept. 30.

So the restaurant on the corner isn't stalled. The slow part went on at City Hall and in state filings, not behind the front door. As of late October 2026, El Farol had no announced reopening date. It does have a recorded approval that it didn't have at the end of summer.

The Building Was Never the Holdup

The deal itself went quickly. Damien Muñoz and Maria Vigil, the husband-and-wife owners of Palacio Cafe on East Palace Avenue, bought El Farol, and the Santa Fe New Mexican reported that the sale became final April 21.

The paper also reported that the purchase included all the kitchen equipment. The building, which dates back nearly two centuries, had an extensive renovation in 2018, with floors and walls redone down to the studs. The same report said the new owners had taken possession and were working to open as quickly as possible.

The New Mexican wrote that securing the right to keep the El Farol name was important to Muñoz.

What Was Sold Off Before the Sale

The New Mexican's report included one line that explains most of the wait. The restaurant's liquor license had already been sold by the former ownership group, and Muñoz planned to get a new one.

For a place known for its bar and late nights, that matters. The Albuquerque Journal's coverage of the November 2025 closure described a venue built on Spanish cuisine, live music and flamenco dinner shows. The former owners pointed to investors' plans to sell the property and to economic conditions. The Santa Fe Reporter covered the closure the following week.

At the April sale, the reported plan was to reopen within 60 to 90 days, which would have put the doors open around July. July came and went with the license still in process.

The Paper Trail, in Order

Each step below is a public filing or published report you can check.

  1. November 2025. El Farol closes. The Albuquerque Journal reports it on Nov. 12.
  2. April 21. The sale to Muñoz and Vigil becomes final. The building, name and kitchen equipment are part of it. The old liquor license is not.
  3. Aug. 5, 2026. The New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Department's Alcohol and Gaming Division grants preliminary approval to El Farol, LLC and sends the application to the City of Santa Fe for local approval.
  4. Aug. 25 and Sept. 1, 2026. Public hearing notices run in the newspaper.
  5. Sept. 23, 2026. The city's Liquor License Hearing Officer holds a video hearing. The officer recommends approving the transfer of ownership and location of Inter-Local Dispenser License No. DIS-001248 to 808 Canyon Road.
  6. Sept. 30, 2026. The item goes on the consent agenda of the Regular Governing Body meeting. The meeting summary records it as "Approved on consent," and the consent agenda passed on a 7-0 roll call.
  7. Oct. 14, 2026. The minutes of the Sept. 30 meeting go on the Governing Body's agenda for approval.

Count the gaps and the summer makes sense. The state's preliminary approval came about fifteen weeks after closing. The city vote came eight weeks after that. All of it was license work for a building that already had a kitchen.

What the Filing Says About the Next El Farol

The license application is the best public preview of what the new owners intend. The hearing officer's report describes on-premises consumption and patio service at 808 Canyon Road.

The projected hours in the application suggest El Farol's late-night role is part of the plan. For Friday and Saturday, the filing lists 7 a.m. to 1 a.m.

These hours come from the application, not a posted schedule, and they can change once the restaurant opens. They still tell you something. A 7 a.m. start points to breakfast, which is part of what Palacio Cafe is known for downtown. The 1 a.m. weekend close points to evenings that run late on Canyon Road again.

The menu fits that read. The New Mexican reported that the new El Farol menu will reflect Palacio's, with an atmosphere a bit more formal than the Palace Avenue cafe. No public schedule for live music or flamenco has been announced yet. Those were the old El Farol's best-known nights, so that will be the first thing many neighbors look for.

What Still Stands Between Approval and Open Doors

The Sept. 30 vote approved the transfer at the local level. The hearing officer's report also says the applicant still has to get the necessary permits and meet code requirements before the city liquor license can be issued.

The city's planning letter in the same packet places 808 Canyon Road inside the Downtown and Eastside Historic District. The Historic Districts Review Board's Oct. 13 agenda had no case for 808 Canyon Road. That fits a building that was renovated in 2018 and sold with its kitchen in place.

So the remaining steps are permits and code compliance. The broad questions are settled: who owns the building, whether the name stays, and whether the city supports alcohol service at this address. As of late October, the new owners had not announced an opening date.

The Rest of the Block Kept Moving

El Farol's empty year hasn't left the upper end of Canyon Road quiet. A few doors up, Black Swan Gallery held its grand opening Friday, Aug. 28, 2026, at 836A Canyon Road, across from Santa Fe Teahouse & Bistro. The Teahouse at 821 Canyon Road is run by owners Brittani and Cole Campbell, according to the Santa Fe Reporter's Best of Santa Fe 2026 food and drink guide. The same guide lists Geronimo at 724 Canyon Road.

Farther down the road at 653 Canyon Road, The Compound has a new name in its kitchen. The restaurant's team page says Dale Kester became executive chef in 2026, working under owner and chef Mark Kiffin.

Then comes the night the whole street is built around. The Canyon Road Merchants Association describes the Farolito Walk as a Christmas Eve event that starts at sundown. Walkers fill Canyon Road, Acequia Madre and other Eastside streets, and those streets close to cars and parking for the event. This year Christmas Eve falls on a Thursday. The association hasn't posted 2026 times, shuttle plans or parking details yet, so check its page as December gets closer.

El Farol sits right on that walking route, so a lot of neighbors will be watching to see whether it's open by Dec. 24. The approved license brings that closer than it looked in July. The rest depends on how quickly the permits come through.
