The Quiet Route Through Canyon Road's Loudest Weekend

Ask anyone who has lived on the Eastside more than a season what August actually feels like, and the answer isn't galleries or green chile. It's parking. The Santa Fe Indian Market brings nearly 1,000 Native artists from more than 200 tribal nations to the Plaza for what is now its 104th year, with public dates on Saturday and Sunday.

Canyon Road has its own calendar of programming during Indian Market weekend, one block off the Plaza.

The August 5 Summer Walk

Before the market weekend, there was Wednesday. The Canyon Road Summer Walk returned for its third year on August 5. First Wednesdays through the summer bring food, music, and open studios to the street. If you've been meaning to stop and talk with a gallery owner, the walk offered that chance.

What "Indian Market weekend" actually means on this street

The Plaza gets the headline dates, August 15 and 16, but the broader Indian Market weekend runs Thursday through Sunday, and Canyon Road spends the entire stretch doing its own programming. Galleries along the road time exhibitions to the market, often showing work from the same juried artists who have booths on the Plaza the same weekend. Canyon Road galleries offer a different setting, with air conditioning and seating.

Three shows on the street are worth knowing about specifically:

• Aurelia Gallery is showing Guillermo Galindo's The Vortex Remembers Everything, which opened in mid-July and runs through September 13, well past market weekend.
• Obscura Gallery opens In Light and Shadow, a collection of work from Indigenous photographers, on August 14, the same day as the Plaza's Best of Show Ceremony, and keeps it up through September 26.
• Ventana Fine Art, housed in the old red brick schoolhouse on Canyon Road, holds a Friday reception that same evening, August 14, and another on September 4.

Those dates also make Friday a useful time to visit Canyon Road.

The Friday move

If there's one piece of timing worth adopting from people who've done this a few years running, it's this. Walk Canyon Road on Friday afternoon, August 14, ahead of the Saturday Plaza opening. The Best of Show Ceremony and Luncheon happens that day at the Community Convention Center, hours before the Plaza booths even open to the public Saturday morning, so Friday on Canyon Road offers a different pace from the ceremony and Saturday's Plaza opening. The galleries are showing work from the same caliber of artist who will be selling on the Plaza the next day, the sidewalks are still walkable, and you get a first look before Saturday's Plaza activity begins.

Reservations, not walk-ins

The kitchens on this street know what's coming too. The Compound, at 653 Canyon Road, brought on Michelin-trained Executive Chef Dale Kester this year, and tables during market week fill weeks out rather than days. Geronimo, a few doors down in the 1756 Borrego House, books the same way. If dinner on your own street during market week matters to you, the call goes in now, not later in market week. The neighborhood calendar continues after Indian Market weekend

Indian Market weekend is not the end of the season on the Eastside. The Obscura show runs through September 26. Aurelia's runs another month. The actual marker for the end of summer here is the Burning of Zozobra, its 102nd burning, on September 4 at Fort Marcy Park, the same night as Ventana's September 4 reception. That date extends the Eastside calendar beyond the Sunday the Plaza booths come down.
