Wallpaper* Magazine just awarded their 2026 Best Use of Material prize to a home right here in our backyard — and the material they're celebrating is literally the earth beneath our feet.
Sombra de Santa Fe, designed by Tucson-based Dust Architects, sits in the Galisteo Basin Preserve on a mesa at 6,500 feet with panoramic views across the Northern New Mexico landscape. What makes this home remarkable isn't just its striking dark geometric volumes — it's that the walls are built from compressed scoria, the volcanic sand that's native to this exact terrain.
The two-foot-thick scoria walls provide exceptional insulation against our extreme temperature swings, with deep window reveals that shade the interior during the hottest parts of summer. Inside, the design team created a central living area flanked by two ensuite bedrooms, with east-facing utility spaces and a west-facing covered terrace oriented for sunset views over the Sandia and Manzanita Mountains. A separate guest house and garage sit a short distance from the main residence.
This is exactly the kind of design intelligence that defines genuine luxury in Northern New Mexico. It's not about importing materials from somewhere else — it's about understanding this land deeply enough to build with it.
Properties that integrate authentic regional materials and passive solar design aren't just architecturally significant — they command premiums in the resale market. Buyers at the luxury level increasingly value homes that respond to the landscape rather than fight it. If you're considering building custom in the greater Santa Fe area, this project is a masterclass in what's possible.
